Overview/Guidelines:
South Dakota requires no permits or registration for physicians to dispense non-controlled medications at the point of care. If a physician follows all state and federal laws for prescription drugs they have the right to dispense out of their practice during the normal course of practicing medicine. South Dakota physicians are allowed to dispense controlled substances to patients as long as they fill out a controlled substance registration form and pay the applicable fee.
Required Documentation:
No dispensing license or registration is required for non-controlled substances. A dispensing registration and permit is required for controlled substances and depending on the physician’s and patient’s individual need to dispense.
