Alabama

Physician Dispensing Allowed:

Yes

Overview/Guidelines:

Alabama requires no permits or registration for physicians to dispense medications at the point of care. If a physician follows all state and federal laws for prescription drugs they have the right to dispense out of their practice during the normal course of practicing medicine. A registration is required for an Alabama physician licensed who orders for and delivers to a patient a controlled substance for the patient’s use, where the controlled substance is purchased for resale to the patient. The registration requirement is applicable to all physicians who dispense or cause to be dispensed any controlled substance for consumption or administration by a patient off the premises of the clinic, hospital or other facility where the physician practices. A controlled substance which is consumed by or administered to a patient while the patient is being treated in a facility where the physician practices is not considered to be dispensed for the purposes of this rule.

Required Documentation:

No dispensing license or registration is required for non-controlled substances. A dispensing registration and permit is required for controlled substances and depending on the physician’s and patient’s individual need to dispense.
