North Carolina

Physician Dispensing Allowed:

Yes

Overview/Guidelines:

North Carolina physicians are required to register with the State Pharmacy Board as a dispensing physician before dispensing medications in-office. The registration fee gives a physician who is authorized to prescribe medications in the state to dispense those medications during the normal course of practicing medicine. All dispensing physicians must comply in all respects with the laws and regulations that apply to pharmacists governing the distribution of drugs. These responsibilities include drug utilization review, patient counseling, appropriate packaging, labeling, and record keeping.

Required Documentation:

A dispensing registration and permit is required depending on the physician’s and patient’s individual need to dispense.
