Oregon

Physician Dispensing Allowed:

Yes

Overview/Guidelines:

The Oregon Medical Board requires that a physician register as a dispensing physician. The registration gives a physician who is authorized to prescribe medications in the state the ability to dispense those medications during the normal course of practicing medicine as long has he or she complies with state and federal law. Dispensing of drugs must be documented in the patient record and must include the name of the drug, the dose, the quantity dispensed, the directions for use and the name of the physician or physician assistant dispensing the drugs. The physician or physician assistant must verbally counsel the patient concerning any new medications and must provide written information on the directions for use.

Required Documentation:

A dispensing registration and permit is required depending on the physician’s and patient’s individual need to dispense.
